The MBA in Strategic Management and Consulting provides students with a deep grounding in the basic logic of competitive advantage, premised on a careful analytical treatment of the distinct qualities and positions of individual firms and an understanding of broader competitive dynamics. The programme positions students well for guiding strategy at both established and emerging enterprises, as well as preparing them for positions with consulting firms that work with firms in setting their strategies. The programme focuses on providing knowledge, skills and competencies to become a strategic leader in corporate, private or government organizations. The focus is on developing leadership skills that enables students to craft, execute, and lead a defined strategy that sustains the business or organization in the dynamic changing scenario. The concentration provides an understanding about strategic risks and risk management to lead organizations proactively. The Concentration equips the student to drive innovation and creativity in organizations, as well as plan and direct incremental and transformational changes for organizational excellence.

 

In the first year of the programme, students study carefully selected courses calculated to make them well-equipped with the requisite knowledge that makes them fit for every managerial position that comes their way after the programme. In the second year, of this specialization, students will learn International Business Management, Strategic Management Consulting, Business Process Re-engineering, Competitive Analysis and Corporate Development which are critical in this modern age.

 

The goals and objectives of the MBA Strategic Management and Consulting Option programme are:

  1. To develop understanding of the concepts and theories of strategic management and consulting
  2. To develop an understanding of leadership strategies related to innovation and creativity in organizations
  3. To expose students to leadership strategies and experiences in leading and managing change
  4. To equip students with knowledge, concepts and techniques related to strategic risk management.

 

Admission requirements for students to enroll on the MBA Strategic Management and Consulting programme is a first degree with least Second Class (Lower Division) from a recognized institution. Applicants must in addition have a thorough proficiency in written and spoken English. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to pay required fees and pass an entry examination to be conducted by KNUST School of Business.

All Master of Business Administration students undertake a six (6) credit hour research project that leads to a submitted thesis report that is orally defended by the student.

 

Teaching methods include but are not limited to Face to face-to-face lectures, hands-on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) techniques, case study illustrations, and practice-oriented virtual exercises using the KNUST Learning Management System (LMS) called the Virtual Classroom. Seminars/Workshops, Audio-visual/Poster presentation

 

A critical observation of advertisements in job vacancies in the media reveals that many of the job vacancies are in the areas of Strategic Management. Currently most businesses are in search for well-trained top management personnel to manage organization’s resources, analyze internal and external forces and develop strategies to realize organization’s goals and objectives.
