The Human Resource Management specialization is crafted to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage and develop and organization’s workforce effectively thus contributing to the overall success and competitiveness of the organization. The course is very crucial because it is related to the maximization and optimization of an organization’s most valuable asset: its people. The course will provides an understanding on the designing and implementation of effective training programs that enhance employees’ skills and performance. Students would also learn how to develop fair and effective performance appraisal systems. Students will learn how to align HR practices and policies with the overall business strategy to support organizational goals as well ass develop strategies for workforce planning, including forecasting future staffing needs and succession planning.
To the extent that students who opt for the Human Resource Management specialization are usually practicing HR managers with vast industrial experience, the programme seeks to sharpen their minds to prepare them for future managerial assignments by exposing them to other functional areas of management including Corporate Finance, MIS, Law and so many more.
In the first year of the programme, students study carefully selected courses calculated to make them well-equipped with the requisite knowledge that makes them fit for every managerial position that comes their way after the programme. In the second year, of this specialization, students will learn Compensation and Rewards, Strategic Human Resource Management, Coaching for Performance, and International Human Resource Management as well as Employment Relation and Labour Law which are critical in modern accounting.
The goals and objectives of the MBA Human Resource Management Option programme are:
- To address the academic deficiency of professional human resource managers to make them more effective in decision making roles
- To broaden the knowledge of graduates with the theoretical and empirical basis of human resource management missing in professional human resource management education.
- To develop the soft skills of professional human resource managers required for research in the human resource management domain.
- To prepare students to obtain full exemptions for all papers up to the Application Level and, in this way, complete the final stage of the professional examinations in good time.
Admission requirement for students to enroll on the MBA Human Resource Management programme is first degree with least Second Class (Lower Division) from a recognized institution. Applicants must in addition have a thorough proficiency in written and spoken English. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to pay required fees and pass an entry examination to be conducted by KNUST School of Business.

All Master of Business Administration students undertake a six (6) credit hour research project that leads to a submitted thesis report that is orally defended by the student.
Teaching methods include but are not limited to Face to face-to-face lectures, hands-on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) techniques, case study illustrations, and practice-oriented virtual exercises using the KNUST Learning Management System (LMS) called the Virtual Classroom.
